A bit farther than I'd go, but the Porta Pro and the KSC75 (which I prefer) are vital to keep you grounded in this hobby. They're so fucking good for so cheap. As for better headphones, there are plenty that are better and more enjoyable but I think the HD650 seems to be the ultimate successor to the Porta Pro in my mind. DT 880 for the KSC75.
If your friend likes featherweight headphones, I’d go with the Koss Porta Pro. From what I’ve heard, the Porta Pro is a darker sounding KSC75. If they like headphones with weight and cups that “hug” their ears like pillows, I’d get the SHP 9500. I personally prefer the SHP9500 over the KOSS KSC75. I hope this helps.
Treble is very natural and very detailed without being fatiguing. The soundstage is pretty average, not very wide. The Koss KSC75 are the best headphones under $100 in terms of sound quality. They even compete with headphones way above their price bracket and even beats a lot of them in terms of sound.
This is a review and detailed measurements of the KOSS Porta Pro on-ear headphones. It was kindly purchased and donated to the forum for review. It costs US $50. This is an ultra light headphone that folds into a very small package: You barely feel it on your ear and that is it. It is extremely comfortable for me.
I have the Koss KSC75 headphones, which have hooks that clip around the ears, what you see here is the drivers from KSC75 that have been combined with a headband from Koss Porta Pro headphones. KSC75 can be had for $20 whereas Porta Pro are about $50. But I think it's totally worth.
